Uttar Pradesh Records 17,043 Police Encounters in Nine Years Under Yogi Adityanath Government: 289 Criminals Neutralised
Uttar Pradesh reports 17,043 police encounters in nine years under the Yogi Adityanath government, resulting in 34,253 arrests and 289 criminals neutralised. The data highlights zone-wise law enforcement operations, police casualties, and large-scale anti-crime actions under a zero-tolerance policy across the state.
According to the government report on the state’s security operations, Uttar Pradesh Police has carried out an average of five encounters per day over the nine-year period. During these operations, 11,834 accused persons were injured after being shot in the legs in what has been described as non-lethal disabling action.
The enforcement drive has also come at a significant cost to the police force. A total of 18 police personnel have lost their lives in the line of duty during these encounters, while 1,852 officers have sustained injuries while confronting armed criminals.
State Cabinet Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh has achieved a structured and strengthened law and order environment, asserting that organized crime has been effectively brought under control.
Zone-wise data highlights significant regional variations in encounter operations. The Meerut Zone recorded the highest number of actions in the state with 4,813 encounters, leading to the arrest of 8,921 accused individuals. In these operations, 3,513 accused were injured and 97 hardened criminals were neutralised. The zone also reported 477 injured police personnel and the martyrdom of two officers.
The Varanasi Zone ranked second with 1,292 encounters, resulting in 2,426 arrests and 29 criminals neutralised. Additionally, 907 accused and 104 police personnel were injured during these operations.
The Agra Zone stood third with 2,494 encounters, leading to 5,845 arrests. In these actions, 968 accused were injured and 24 criminals were killed, while 62 police personnel sustained injuries.
Other significant figures include the Bareilly Zone, which recorded 2,222 encounters and 21 criminals neutralised. The Lucknow Zone reported 971 encounters with 20 criminals killed. The Ghaziabad Commissionerate registered 789 encounters, the highest among commissionerates, resulting in 18 fatalities among accused persons.
Further breakdown shows the Kanpur Zone with 791 encounters and 12 criminals killed. The Lucknow Commissionerate reported 147 encounters with 12 criminals neutralised. The Prayagraj Zone recorded 643 encounters with 11 fatalities among accused individuals.
In commissionerate-level data, Agra recorded 489 encounters with 10 criminals killed, Gautam Buddha Nagar reported 1,144 encounters with nine fatalities, Gorakhpur Zone saw 699 encounters with eight criminals killed, Varanasi Commissionerate recorded 146 encounters with eight fatalities, Prayagraj Commissionerate reported 150 encounters with six deaths, and Kanpur Commissionerate recorded 253 encounters with four criminals neutralised.
The extensive statewide enforcement data underscores the scale and intensity of Uttar Pradesh’s policing strategy under the current administration, reflecting an aggressive operational approach aimed at controlling organized and violent crime across all major regions of the state.
